  • While a horrific gang rape in New Delhi has transfixed India and drawn attention to a violent epidemic, rape is just one facet of a broad range of violence and discrimination that leads to the deaths of almost two million women a year, researchers say. Among the causes are not only sexual violence but also domestic violence, family disputes and female infanticide, as well as infant neglect and poor care of the elderly that affect girls and women far more than boys and men. Read Article…
  • In one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, Cité Soleil or Sun City, violence prevails. An estimated 50 percent or more of girls and women living in this area have been raped. A paternalistic society that treat girls and women as property, makes it very difficult to find justice for those experiencing gender-based violence. Read Article…
  • Of the 3 million migrant farm works in the US, around 630,000 are women, with a large majority of these undocumented. In a 2010 survey conducted by Irma Morales Waugh of UC Santa Cruz, 80 percent of the female farmworkers interviewed experienced sexual assault or harassment. Many don’t report these incidents due to fear of deportation if they speak up. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which expired almost a year and a half ago, would have helped increase the legal options of these women. Read Article…
